Understanding Sunscreen: Debunking Myths and Making Informed Choices
I designed this module-based course for anyone who wants to learn about the importance of sunscreen, understand the basics, and debunk common misconceptions. As a native Floridian, I've always been aware of the sun's powerful rays and their effects. While sunscreen was a staple for beach trips and long days at the zoo when I was younger, it wasn't part of my everyday routine. That changed when my mother was diagnosed with melanoma, making skin cancer a very personal reality. This inspired me to create a course to inform others, like myself, who may not realize the importance of daily sun protection.

The Process
Course Outline & Objectives
I chose Articulate Rise as the platform for this course because of its user-friendly interface, interactive features, and customizable design elements. These qualities allowed me to craft a unique, engaging course rather than just delivering an info dump. I started by creating an outline in Google Docs to organize my thoughts and establish the course objectives.

Research Phase
Once I established the course outline and objectives, I began my research phase. Throughout this process, I focused on managing cognitive load and incorporated concepts from Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction. My goal was to create a concise (15-20 minutes), straightforward course that avoided overwhelming learners with complex terms or "nice-to-know" information, focusing instead on essential "need-to-know" facts. The challenge was to sift through the massive amount of information available and narrow it down to what was most appropriate for the course's goals. My objective was to present the information in small, digestible bites that learners could easily understand and retain.
Course Design
The outline served as a rough roadmap, which I then transformed into a detailed text-based storyboard using the information gathered during my research phase. This storyboard became the blueprint for the course, outlining the content and providing step-by-step instructions for efficiently assembling the course in Articulate Rise.

To enhance learner retention and engagement, I incorporated various interactive elements. Each module concluded with knowledge checks, including matching and sorting activities, to reinforce key concepts. Additionally, I designed a scenario-based experience where learners assist a dermatologist, Dr. Ann, in addressing a patient's misconceptions about sunscreen. This hands-on approach helps learners apply their knowledge in a practical context.
To visually illustrate the different types of sunscreen and their functions, I used Canva to create infographics. These visuals not only break up the text but also provide clear, easy-to-understand information that caters to visual learners.
To wrap up the course, I included a quiz to test user knowledge and serve as a summative assessment of what learners have gained.

Full Development
Once the storyboard was complete, I began building the course in Rise, carefully following the blueprint to ensure all elements were included and aligned with the course objectives. This structured approach allowed me to create a comprehensive and engaging learning experience that effectively educates learners on the importance of sunscreen and how to make informed choices.
Feedback & Takeaways
Upon completing the course development, I conducted a peer review process to gather constructive feedback on its functionality and effectiveness. I asked participants to assess whether the course provided new insights, offered real-world applicability, and influenced their perspective on sunscreen usage. Their feedback was crucial in refining the course to ensure it was both educational and practical.
Participants particularly appreciated the knowledge checks at the end of each module, which reinforced key concepts instead of focusing on peripheral details. The visual consistency and interactive components were also highly praised for maintaining engagement and enhancing the learning experience. Additionally, they noted the course’s clear, well-structured format that made complex information easy to understand without overwhelming the learner. This feedback was essential in ensuring the course’s user-friendly design and informative nature.
This course could be valuable for raising awareness about sun protection in schools, workplaces, or community programs. The content could also be tailored for health professionals, skincare brands, or wellness initiatives to provide accurate, science-based information on UV protection.
Throughout this project, I honed my skills in course design, research, and content development. I applied feedback strategically to improve the course’s usability and effectiveness, gaining valuable experience in creating a dynamic and engaging learning experience that meets instructional goals.
